Reframe the trip and it delights. Guests who come for “the Sahara” alone can leave underwhelmed; guests who come for the Drâa + a desert night leave enchanted. Same trip. The framing is ours to give and yours to keep.
Insist on the camp question. Zagora’s price wars produced some grim camps. Ours we know personally — but if you’re comparing operators, ask to see their actual camp’s photos, not stock dunes. Silence is an answer.
Take the Chigaga day if you possibly can. One extra day converts this from “nice trip, small dunes” to “how is this not famous?” It’s the single best upgrade in southern Morocco.
The Drâa deserves your eyes, not your nap. The temptation after the early start is to sleep through the palms. Fight it — this valley is the trip’s co-star, and morning light on day two is its encore.
Pack the desert basics. Warm layer (nights chill fast, near-freezing in winter), scarf for sun and sand, long trousers for the camel, headlamp, small overnight bag — the checklist rides identical to Merzouga’s.
Summer needs the dawn strategy. July–August afternoons on this road are fierce; we shift the schedule earlier and the camel later. It works — but spring and autumn remain the kind seasons.
When Is the Best Time for a Zagora Desert Tour
Spring (March–May) and autumn (October–November): the golden windows — warm days, mild camp nights, the palmery green and generous.
Winter (December–February): crystal skies and the year’s best stars, with genuinely cold nights (pack real layers); daytime is sunny and ideal for the valley.

Believing “big dunes, 2 days” promises. The physics don’t exist. Two days = Zagora’s small dunes; big dunes = Merzouga (3 days) or Chigaga (3 days). Anyone claiming otherwise has told you everything about their honesty.
Booking the cheapest square-corner deal. Zagora is where Morocco’s rock-bottom tours race each other down — sad camps, packed minibuses, rushed palms. The trip’s charm dies exactly there.
Sleeping through the Draa Valley. The co-star of the whole journey, missed for a nap. Coffee at Agdz; eyes open after.
Skipping Chigaga out of ignorance. Most price-hunters never learn it exists. You just did — and it’s the best sand-per-day ratio in Morocco.
