Take the early start seriously. Leaving by 7:00 means the pass in morning light, the ksar before the midday buses, and the golden hour on the drive home. The whole day improves.
Say yes to the Telouet detour if scenery moves you. It’s the old south’s secret door — the painted salons alone are worth the hour, and the Ounila Valley is the most beautiful road most visitors never see.
Wear real shoes and expect a climb. The ksar’s lanes are steep and uneven, and the granary viewpoint is a proper 15–20 minute ascent. Comfortable closed shoes, sun hat, water.
Mind the seasons on the pass. Winter can dust the Tichka with snow (magnificent, occasionally slow); summer afternoons bake — another argument for the early start. We track conditions daily.
Bring small cash. Terrace lunches, artisan paintings, the odd entry fee, tips — dirhams in small notes keep the day smooth.

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are ideal: clear passes, comfortable walking at the ksar, and the Ounila Valley at its greenest (spring) or most golden (autumn).
Winter (December–February) offers crisp light and snow-crowned drama on the Tichka — beautiful, with the small caveat of occasional weather delays on the pass. The ksar itself is mild and quiet.
Summer (June–August) works with the early-start strategy: pass at dawn, ksar by mid-morning, shaded lunch, and air-conditioned miles through the afternoon heat.

Common Mistakes Travelers Make at Aït Ben Haddou
Starting late. The single biggest one. A 9:30 departure means midday crowds at the ksar and darkness on the pass coming home. Dawn departures win everything.
Skipping the interior “because the view from across the river is the photo.” The postcard is outside; the magic — lanes, towers, lived-in courtyards, the granary panorama — is inside. Cross the river.
Underestimating the day. It’s ~12 hours door to door. Wonderful, but not the day to combine with a sunrise balloon or a late desert dinner. (Or: take the desert route and un-compress it.)
Missing Telouet out of ignorance. Most tours don’t offer it; most travelers never hear of it. Now you have — decide accordingly.
Wearing sandals to a hillside citadel. Steep clay lanes + smooth stones = real shoes, please.
Expecting dunes. Aït Ben Haddou is kasbah country — stony desert and red cliffs, not sand seas. The dunes live 5+ hours further east at Merzouga; plenty of travelers confuse the two until the brochure disappoints them. Ours won’t.
