14:30 — Chefchaouen. The first sight — a blue cascade spilling down the mountainside — lands every time. Check into your riad inside the medina, drop the bags, and breathe: you have the town's best hours entirely ahead of you.
15:30 — Guided walk through the blue. With the crowds thinning by the hour: the kasbah and its gardens, Plaza Uta el-Hammam, the wool-dyers and weavers of the Rif tradition, the spring at Ras el-Ma where the town launders and gossips, and lane after lane of impossible blue.
18:30 — Sunset from the Spanish Mosque. The twenty-minute climb (or a short taxi) to the hilltop chapel-mosque, and below you: the whole blue amphitheatre catching fire as the Rif turns violet. The trip's first unforgettable moment.
20:00 — Dinner on the square. Tagine and grilled lamb under lanterns, the town gone quiet and local. This — the evening version of Chefchaouen — is what day-trippers never meet.

Take the Rabat hour. It’s exactly en route, costs sixty minutes, and hands you a second city — the capital’s kasbah alone repays the stop. We include it free; just say yes.
Pack a real layer, even in summer. Chefchaouen sits near 600 metres in the Rif — evenings run crisp year-round and cold in winter. The town photographs warm; the rooftop dinner air disagrees.
Shoes with grip, always. The blue medina is a staircase with a town attached, and Akchour is a genuine walk on rocky paths. Leave the smooth soles in Casa.
Ask before photographing people. Chefchaouen is more camera-patient than anywhere in Morocco — asking first is how it stays that way. (The blue doors, mercifully, never object.)
Buy the wool where it’s woven. The Rif’s blankets and garments are Chefchaouen’s genuine article — loomed locally, unlike most souvenirs anywhere. It’s the purchase that’s actually from where you bought it.
And the Rif’s famous other offer? A polite “la, shukran” ends it instantly. Engaging is illegal, unnecessary, and the entire subject closes there.

Day-tripping it. Casablanca–Chefchaouen–Casablanca in one day is physically possible and experientially pointless — nine hours of road for the town’s worst, most crowded hours. The overnight isn’t an upgrade; it’s the product.
Sleeping through the golden morning. The riad bed argues persuasively at 7 a.m. Overrule it — this is the hour the town was painted for.
Skipping Rabat to “save time.” You’ll spend the hour anyway; spend it on a royal kasbah instead of a service station.
Underdressing for Rif evenings. The shivering rooftop diner in a Casablanca-weight shirt is a Chefchaouen archetype. Bring the layer.
Attempting Akchour in fashion sneakers. Turquoise pools sit at the end of real rocky paths. Grip or grief — your choice.
