When Is the Best Time to Visit Merzouga
The desert climate makes timing important.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) are the best times for a Merzouga desert tour, with warm days, comfortable evenings, and ideal conditions for camel trekking and camping.
Summer (June to August) is very hot, with daytime temperatures often exceeding 40°C. Tours still run with early starts and adjusted timing, but the midday heat is intense.
Winter (December to February) brings pleasant, sunny days but genuinely cold nights, which can drop near or below freezing in the dunes. With warm layers it’s a beautiful, quiet time to visit, and the low sun is stunning for photography.
Spring and autumn suit most travelers best, and they’re ideal across the rest of Morocco too, which makes them the smart choice for a wider trip.
Travel Planning Tips for a Merzouga Desert Tour
A few things to know before you go.
Understand the distances. Merzouga is roughly 9 to 10 hours by road from Marrakesh and 7 to 8 hours from Fes. This is why a real Sahara tour needs at least two to three days — it cannot be done as a day trip (more on that below).
Pack smart for the desert. Bring a warm layer and a scarf (for cold nights, sun, and dust), comfortable closed shoes plus sandals, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, a headlamp or torch, and plenty of water. You can leave your main luggage in the vehicle and take a small overnight bag to camp.

Thinking Merzouga is a day trip. It isn’t. The Erg Chebbi dunes are 9 to 10 hours from Marrakesh, so a real Merzouga tour needs at least two to three days. Be very wary of anyone promising the “Sahara in a day.”
Confusing Merzouga with Zagora. Many cheap “2-day desert tours” actually go to Zagora, which has small, scrubby dunes — not the towering sand sea of the Erg Chebbi at Merzouga. If you want the classic Sahara dunes, make sure your tour goes to Merzouga.
Booking the cheapest camp. The gap between a basic and a quality desert camp is large. This is the one night of your trip worth investing in.
Underdressing for the cold. Desert nights get cold, and winter nights can freeze. Travelers who pack only for the heat are caught out. Always bring warm layers.
Ignoring the summer heat. July and August are scorching. If you visit then, plan early starts and expect intense midday heat.
Overpacking for the camp. You only need a small overnight bag in the dunes. Leave the rest in the vehicle.
