What Riding a Camel Is Actually Like (Honest Answers)
The questions everyone wonders and few pages answer.
The mounting is the adventure. Camels sit to load you, then stand back-end first — a two-stage lurch that feels like a small carnival ride. Hold the pommel, lean back, laugh; your guide has done this ten thousand times.
The ride is a sway, not a trot. Once up, the motion is a slow rolling rock — most people find it hypnotic within minutes. Caravans move at walking pace with a guide on foot; nobody gallops off into the sunset (thankfully).
Comfort has a time limit. Honest truth: 60–90 minutes is the sweet spot for most bodies. That’s exactly why the classic trek is timed as it is, and why multi-day caravans alternate riding with walking. If you have hip or back issues, tell us — shorter rides and 4×4 transfers to camp exist for a reason.
It’s beginner-proof. No experience, no balance skills, no “riding lessons” needed. If you can sit on a swaying sofa, you can ride a camel.

Camel Welfare: How to Choose a Ride You Can Feel Good About
We care about this, and travelers increasingly ask — good. Here’s the honest guidance.
Well-treated camels are calm, well-fed, and rested. Look for animals with healthy coats, no saddle sores, unfrayed tempers, and handlers who talk to them. Camels working in rotation (not the same animals hauling tourists all day, every day) is the mark of a good outfit.
Weight limits exist and good operators enforce them. A healthy adult dromedary carries a rider comfortably; responsible teams cap loads (typically around 100 kg / 220 lbs) and offer walking-caravan or 4×4 alternatives graciously.
Your choices shape the industry. Booking with operators who treat their animals well — and skipping the saddest-looking roadside photo-op camels — rewards the right people. It’s the same rule as the argan “goats in trees”: vote with your dirhams.

When Is the Best Time for a Camel Tour in Morocco
Spring (March–May) and autumn (October–November) are perfection: warm days, mild evenings, and the Sahara at its most welcoming. Prime season for the full trek-and-camp experience.
Winter (December–February) delivers the clearest skies and the crispest starfields — dazzling — with genuinely cold desert nights (near freezing). The camps handle it with thick duvets and fires; you handle it with layers.
Summer (June–August) is hot, and the camel schedule adapts: later sunset rides, earlier sunrise rides, and shaded middays. Agafay evenings and Essaouira beach rides (cooled by the Atlantic) shine in this season.

What to Wear and Bring on a Camel Trek
Long trousers (the golden rule — jeans or hiking pants), closed shoes, and a scarf or shemagh (sun, wind, sand, and excellent photos). Sunglasses and sunscreen always; a warm layer for the post-sunset chill even in summer; a headlamp for camp. Leave the big luggage in the vehicle — a small overnight bag rides with the caravan or ahead by 4×4. And keep the phone zipped in a pocket for the mounting lurch — the dunes have swallowed many.
Common Mistakes Travelers Make with Camel Tours
Booking the cheapest square-corner “desert tour.” Cut-rate operators cut the same corners on camels, camps, and guides. The saddest animals and the saddest camps travel together.
Expecting dunes at Agafay. Agafay is beautiful, lunar, and 40 minutes from Marrakech — and it is rock, not sand. The dune dreams live at Merzouga, 9+ hours east. We say this everywhere because the disappointment is so avoidable.
Wearing shorts. One hour of saddle-on-calf explains itself. Long pants, every time.
Skipping the sunrise remount. Tired legs whisper “sleep in”; the dawn dunes are the best light of the entire trip. Set the alarm — you can doze in the vehicle after.
Overestimating saddle stamina. Four hours of riding sounds romantic and feels orthopedic. Trust the 60–90 minute segments; that’s experience talking.
Not asking about the animals. Any operator worth your money will happily talk about their camels’ care. Silence or vagueness is an answer too.
